Binns says trade mission to Alberta could net millions of dollars worth of contracts

A two-day trade mission to Alberta could net P.E.I. businesses more than $15 million in contracts over the next 12 months, Premier Pat Binns says.

Binns and the other Atlantic premiers are in oil-rich Alberta to convince business leaders there that work currently being carried out in Alberta could be done in Atlantic Canada. That would create more jobs here and stem the flood of young workers from this region to Alberta.

Rocket fans asked to wear red Friday for P.E.I. soldiers

P.E.I. Rocket fans are encouraged to wear red at their game Friday night against Cape Breton to show support for the P.E.I. reservists who are being deployed to Afghanistan.

The troops already in Afghanistan won’t be left out. McInnis says the game will be telecast and webcast to Afghanistan for the troops.

WestJet adds Charlottetown-Montreal flight

WestJet will launch a non-stop seasonal service between Charlottetown and Montreal beginning in May.

‘We were very pleasantly surprised and delighted.’— Mike Campbell, Charlottetown Airport

This is in addition to the daily non-stop service the airline will reoffer to Toronto this summer.

“It’s really exciting in that Westjet has seen that Charlottetown is a destination that they can expect to get good loads,” said Charlottetown Airport manager Mike Campbell.

Liquor stores may open on Sunday

In Thursday’s throne speech, the province announced that beginning in late May the province will introduce what will likely become year-round Sunday shopping in P.E.I.

At Province House Friday, Development Minister Mike Currie, who is responsible for the Liquor Control Commission, said he could see a handful of liquor stores in key locations across the province also opening their doors on Sundays.

But Currie said the final decision does not lie with the province — it lies with the commission.
Sunday shopping could be coming to a liquor store near you.
